If you’re searching for a refreshing and wholesome summer beverage, this Chikoo Shake (Sapota Milkshake) is a perfect choice.

It’s delicious and easy to make, and a Vietnamese touch will elevate its flavor even more.

Chikoo Shake (Sapota Milkshake)

What is Chikoo?

Chikoo—also known as Sapota or Sapodilla—is a sweet, caramel-like fruit originally from southern Mexico and Central America.

Over time, it found its way to tropical Asia, where it became a local favorite. In Vietnam, we call it sa pô chê or hồng xiêm.

Chikoo Sapota Fruits

Chikoo’s taste is often described as a mellow, sweet blend of jaggery and caramel, similar to a combination of brown sugar and pear.

The texture of ripe chikoo is soft and creamy, reminiscent of a ripe pear or custard apple. It’s not only a delicious fruit but also offers numerous health benefits.

Here in Vietnam, fresh tropical fruits like Chikoo are often blended into creamy Sinh Tố (smoothies) or added to Chè (Vietnamese dessert soups) for a refreshing treat.

I’ve actually shared a post about Vietnamese fruits before—definitely worth a look if you’d like to explore more.

Ingredients for Chikoo Shake

Chikoo is naturally sweet, so you don’t need much to make a delicious milkshake out of it.

But there’s one ingredient I highly recommend to give it a Vietnamese twist — a splash of Vietnamese coffee.

  • Chikoo fruit / Sapota fruit: Choose the ripe fruits.
  • Milk: Use plant-based milk if you don’t consume dairy products.
  • Sweetened condensed milk / Sugar (optional): Since ripe chikoo fruits are already sweet, I don’t use additional sweeteners in my recipe, but you can adjust according to your taste.
  • Ice cubes
  • Coffee: This is the star ingredient for a Vietnamese-style Chikoo smoothie.

Instructions

  • Peel the Chikoo: Remove the skin and seeds to prepare the fruit.
  • Blend the ingredients: Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until smooth. Your Chikoo Shake is ready to drink!
  • Pairing suggestion: I love sipping this sweet, caramel-like smoothie alongside savory treats like Bánh Patê Sô (Pâté Chaud) or Bánh Bao (Steamed Pork Buns).
