  • Sandwich bread: stale bread works best.
  • The classic recipe calls for caramel sauce, but I prefer to add my own twist. Gather sugar, whole milk, butter, salt, and optionally, condensed milk. I include condensed milk for a richer, milkier flavor—it’s optional. If you’re a fan of pure caramel sauce, feel free to skip the salt.

  • Cut the sandwich bread into 0.8 inch (2cm) squared cubes.
  • Toast the bread cubes in a pan until they become crunchy and golden brown.
  • Use a sieve to remove the bread crumbs from the toasted cubes.

  • For the caramel sauce (similar to Vietnamese flan), combine sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Avoid stirring to prevent crystallization. Increase heat to medium-high and let it melt and bubble.
  • Monitor closely for about 5-7 minutes until it turns golden-orange or amber. Quickly add butter, milk, salt, and condensed milk.
  • Cook the caramel sauce on medium-low heat until all ingredients fully melt and start bubbling again.
